Jon Krakauer as an Demonstrative and Meaningful Writer
In "Into Thin Air," Jon Krakauer effectively uses figurative language because he is extremely consistent and various which helps him deliver his story's message to the readers and enchant their minds. Krakauer's similes were so dramatic and convincing that they immediately caught the attention of the readers who received the story's message clearly and effectively. His suspense throughout the story was incredibly effective, that as you continued to read the story you sat in the edge of anticipation and eagerness wondering what would happen next. His imagery emphasizes the feelings and vision of the characters that it seems to appear that one self is in the body and mind of the characters. His second approach was his use of suspense. While you guys are messing around here, I'm losing brain cells by the millions?" (423). This statement was so powerful and moving that it made the readers realize how awful and terrifying death can be. Not only are the characters in anticipation to try and make it to camp to save their lives, but the audience as well is captivated by this suspense and unable to turn away from the story to determine the outcomes of the scenes. Krakauer is consistent, specific, and precise when using his literary techniques, therefore was successful in communicating his true message with the readers. This statement shows the character's impatience as he awaits for the annoying and foolish climbers to get out of his way so he can descend Hillary Step, get to camp and retrieve a tank of oxygen that he is in desperate need of. Krakauer's use of imagery in the story is so well done and vivid that it actually makes the reader believe they are part of the story. The readers clearly received Krakauer's message from the story as they sat in awe visualizing the person's death. In addition to the two figurative languages Krakauer used is imagery. These two examples of Krakauer's use of imagery are effective in captivating the reader's imagination. As the readers read the story they see in their mind what the characters see and feel as if they were there feeling the same pain and agony the characters feel. He manages to make the audience sense they are in the characters minds, feeling and seeing the same pain, eagerness, and fear the characters are going through. till living: "He was as close to death as a person can be and still be breathing" (Krakauer 429). He manages to capture the minds of the readers from the beginning to the end.
