The Deviance of Spousal Cheating

In a society that demands monogamy, the most common cause for a relationship to fail is infidelity. Though not a crime, cheating is most definitely a socially deviant act, with the offender shunned from the community for their immoral doings. However, is the call for monogamy fighting our natural biological blueprint? Out of 4,000 species of mammals on this planet, only less then three percent are considered to be truly monogamous. Human beings do not fall into that three percent. Why does society require that we suppress our natural, instinctive desires to make a futile attempt at a monogamous relationship which will more then likely end up in failure? In fact, recent studies printed in numerous science publications show that monogamous mammals are more prone to extinction then a polygamous species. This charade put on by these couples to suppress their sexual urges is much like the Freudian mental struggle of suppressing the barbaric id state of mind, where immature thoughts and desires are belittled by the ego and superego. 5,000 years of civilization and society cannot dispel millions of years of evolution (Smith), the human being was designed to be a promiscuous animal, by forcing to comply with their emotional feelings

These numbers are staggering for a culture that sees this type of deviance as the third most despicable act, following rape and murder (Cooper). The ego is more or less our reality sense, satisfying the needs of the id while taking into consideration the needs and desires of others while the superego develops moral and ethical restraints upon us, sort of acting as our conscience (Psych 101). Recently, the field of biology has launched extensive researched into the little know field of extinction. Taking every moment the couple has spent and throwing it in trash. Yet 32% of men and 22% of women admit to having an affair, and these are just those who admit to it. Now if Sigmund Freud was correct in his theory, then our monogamous struggle will encompass all three of these aspects. The deviance could best be explained as an emotional betrayal to the spouse. Cheaters are considered by society to be scoundrels, low lives, despicable. In the females the primal urge is to nest and nurture their young. There are roughly four thousand mammalian species on this planet. To what point and purpose is the suppression of these instincts? Is it because we believe ourselves to be more civilized then the wild animals of example? Many would argue that there are numerous species more civilized and socialized then humans. If anything our views on infidelity have become more lax over recent decades with use of the internet allowing people to find others who share their interest.
