             Because through these material possessions the students create a self-image and try to establish an individual identity. The lack of violence and theft over material possessions at Westmount indicates no need for conformity, which is the symbol of uniforms.
             Through their own personal choices in clothing and self-images the students create a variety of social groups. The fear in most school administrations is the presence of gangs. To drown out "Gang-colours" (often red or blue), the administration often turns to the idea of uniforms. The idea is understandable for high-risk schools such as Sir Allan Mc Nab or Sir John A. McDonald, but again, at Westmount this factor does not apply to the general population of students. There is minimal gang presence at Westmount and therefore has no need for uniforms to eliminate gang-colours.
             The Presence of violence and gangs often causes the school administration to consider the uniform as a method of implementing discipline; this would not eliminate gangs, it would just disguise them, making them more dangerous. The students would be in a standard dress, while the teachers in regular clothing would create a distinct sense of difference. Westmount has a unique environment in which the student body and teachers are able to interact at an equal level, rather than an environment similar to a dictatorship. This creates an environment with a unique and efficient learning atmosphere, where both student and teacher work as a team to achieve the learning objectives. Even though the student and teacher work together there is always an underlined sense of the teacher as the superior, worthy of respect from the student. Uniforms are not necessary at Westmount because the implementation of discipline already exists.
