The Revolutionary Republic of Iraq

In ancient times the area now known as modern Iraq was almost equivalent toMesopotamia, the land between two rivers.2 Mesopotamia was set between the Euphratesand Tigris Rivers. This area is known as the Cradle of Civilization, because around 4000B.C. the Sumerian culture thrived. The first written language was developed during theSumerian culture. After the fall of the Sumerian culture, many different empires invadedand "ruled" Mesopotamia. Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, modern day Iraq is acountry of many diverse ethnicities, religions, and beliefs. Seventy-nine percent of all Iraqi people are Arabic, sixteen percent are Kurdish,three percent are Persian, and two percent are Turkish. The majority of the Iraqi peoplepractice the Muslim religion, while only three percent practice Christianity or anotherreligion. These ethnicities and religions make up a nation of more than 22,000,000 The people of Iraq have a life expectancy of 66.53 years, where the male lives65.54 years and the female lives 67.56 years. Iraq is ranked 119th in life expectancy. They are ranked 126th in infant mortality rates with a rate of 62.49 deaths for every 1,000live births. Iraq has a literacy rate of a


7% and the female population having a rate of 45%. Iraq's economy is dominated by oil production. The government of Iraq is said to be a republic, but they are really amilitary dictatorship. Percapita output and living standards are still well below the prewar level, but any estimateshave a wide range of error. He attended CairoLaw School (1962-63) and continued his studies at Baghdad Law College after theBa'thists took power in Iraq in 1963. In December 1996, the UN(United Nations) implemented a program called "oil-for-food", which helped get the oilindustry back on its feet. In 1959 heparticipated in an unsuccessful attempt by Ba'thists to assassinate the Iraqi prime minister,'Abd al-Karim Qasim, and, wounded, escaped to Syria and then Egypt. Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, Iraq became an independent kingdom in1932. He escaped, becoming a leader of the Ba'thparty, and was instrumental in the coup that brought the party back to power in 1968. Oil exports are nowabout three-quarters their prewar level. Service makes up abouteighty-one percent and industry makes up about thirteen percent. Their livestock includes sheep, cattle, goats and poultry. The official language of Iraq is Arabic. The exchange rates of the Iraqi dinar are subject towide fluctuations.
