The Ugly Duckling
"Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other good"(Aristotle). The Epic Poem Beowulf shows how men lived thousands of years ago. Like most other epic poems the readers learn lessons about life. This particular story follows Beowulf, who was on a mission to destroy the infamous monster Grendel. Beowulf succeeds and kills Grendel and becomes hero in the country. Grendel's looks, actions and attitude made him an outcast in society. To begin with, Grendel was considered a monster because of his defects that did not make him look like a perfect human. " Grendle, who haunted the moors, the wild/ Marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but/ Earth he was spawned in that slime."(102). Back when this story was first originated of people of tha
ran out with their bodies, the blood dripping behind him, back to his lair, delighted with his nights slaughter. Grendel was never given a chance to succeed in life cause of his defects at birth. t time if they had a birth defect like being cross-eyed, or even being left hand was reason to consider the person a monster. Grendel's actions forced him to become the outcast of society. Grendel knew killing people would make him an outcast in society, but he did the attacks anyway. " So Grendel ruled, fought with the righteous, One against many, and won. Grendel had no remorse killing anyone; his killing was a more of a hobby then anything. If Grendel was born with out the defects he could have been a solider and a noble hero just like Beowulf was. Grendel's cocky attitude of being the biggest and not being able to be defeated in a fight was an attitude he earned to have because he has killed every man with out much of an effort. Grendel was always looking to terrorize the local warriors. The Epic Poem Beowulf was a classic tale on how a society treats an outcast.
