In the book Lord of the Flies, Jack's rise to power was not an over night process. Since Jack and Ralph were the oldest on the island this meant one of these two individuals would naturally be elected chief. Jack and Ralph were at odds with each other from the first day they were marooned on the island. Both individuals had different ideas on how the island should be governed. Jack had the respect of the choir because he was the head boy of the choir, however, Ralph had the great conch shell, which he used to call all the boys together. Ralph gained the confidence of the rest of the boys on the island by using the shell to bring some order to their chaotic tribe, which showed his natural leadership abilities.
             Ralph was elected chief of the tribe, but permitted Jack to have control over the choir. However this act was just formalizing the control of the choir for everyone knew that the choir's loyalty already resided in Jack. "The group of cloaked boys began to scatter from a close line. Choir! Stand still! Wearily obedient, the choir huddled into line and stood there swaying in the sun" (Golding, pg 17). As the boys stood there in the sun, a few of them asked if they could sit down and one boy fell from exhaustion and Jack shouted 'All right then. Sit down. Let him alone' " (Golding, pg 17). Jack was a authoritative leader and the choir knew not to disobey him. Jack was convinced that he should be the chief of the entire tribe because he felt the job suited him the best. When Jack was appointed control over the hunters, he was pleased because the job catered to his primitive, aggressive behavior. Jack led all explorations around the island and was anxious to see what was over every hill and mountain. He wanted the others to follow him and listen to what he had to say.
