The novels, Fifth Business and The Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies, are ones with many complex themes and characters. But the similarities of some of them are very apparent. Knowledge seeking seems to be a recurring theme in both novels. Dunstable Ramsay in Fifth Business, and Maria Theotoky in The Rebel Angels are two similar characters on the lines of being one to value and seek wisdom. Their pursuit of knowledge greatly influences their relationships with others and their spiritual sides and acceptance of their roots. Through the knowledge of others, and through their dedicated pursuit of knowledge, they learn more about themselves, and learn to become stronger people.
             Theotoky's and Ramsey's quest for knowledge encounter them with many figures that make impacts and bring changes to their lives. These figures are more often than not intellectuals, or people that are able to offer them wisdom. Such can be said about those close to Ramsay, such as Boy Staunton, Liesl and Padre Blazon, or those close to Theotoky, such as Hollier, Parlabane, Darcourt and Arthur Cornish. All of these characters are knowledgeable in their own way, and offer their own share of wisdom. Knowledge even plays a role in the sexual relationships both characters have. Ramsey's most pleasurable experience was with Liesl whom he described as a "gargoyle". The only viable reason to why he enjoyed the experience so much is because of the knowledge about himself she presented. There was no physical attraction in their relationship; it was based solely on the wisdom they provided each other. The relationship between Theotoky and her professor Hollier is alike in that physical attraction was not a major factor. He was much older than she was. Hollier was attracted to Theotoky because of her beauty, brilliance, competence and dedication to scholarship as a student, while she was attracted to him because he motivated her intellectual sided and...
