Jones the Grocer and Not to be Used for Babies
The two poems I have chosen to write about are 'Jones the Grocer' by Herbert Williams an 'Not to be used for Babies' by Harry Webb. Welsh Poets write both of these poems. This essay will explore these poems in detail and identify similarities and differences between the two poems. Jones the Grocer written by Herbert Williams is written in first person Narrative and is about a local tradesman. In the first line of the first stanza we are introduced to the owner of the shop and straight away are given the feeling of loneliness. We are shown this when the narrator writes '...Jones the Grocer, we called him'The word 'the' in Jones the grocer is very impersonal and doesn't convey friendship, this is how we are given the feeling of loneliness. The second line of the first stanza tells us that Jones doesn't lead a very social life when the poet writes '...A pale man, skilled in servility'The word servility suggests that Jones has no self-respect and is irritatingly humble. Also this line gives us a sound of disapproval. The third and fourth line tells us a bit about what Jones is like and what he looks like '...His hands white and soft as the lard he stacked
Also the poet uses a metaphor when he uses the words 'big paw' this compares to Jones's soft white hand. This quotation tell us that he is over fussy when the poet writes 'In small meticulous rows' The next three lines suggest that he is apologetic and gives us a sense of humility towards Jones these points are shown when the narrator writes '. His milk though was good And his measure generous'This shows us that Glyn is a lively character and very generous unlike Jones the Grocer. The second poem 'Not to be used for Babies' at the beginning gives us a completely different feeling than Jones the Grocer. Also when the narrator says 'They have ground Glyn's bones'. We see Glyn taking pride in what he does and owns when the poet writes '. The twelfth line tell us more about Glyn's character '. his head Polished and somehow apologetic, as if He was crowned forever with dishonour' Also the third line of the quotation is used as an oxymoron because it says that he is crowned forever so that would usually be a good thing but it also says with dishonour so that's a bad thing. The first two lines of the second stanza tell us more about what Jones is like when the narrator says '. Also he makes the boy feel like a Roman hero when he describes himself as Caesar and Ben Hur.
