Neutralisation

             Neutralisation is the reaction of an acid with a base or Alkali until the solution is neutral (pH 7). In neutralisation the Acid and the base (or alkali) both looses their properties so the solution becomes neural, salt and water is formed.

             Neutralisation is used in the following everyday situations;
             Farmers use an alkali called Calcium Hydroxide (slaked lime or lime). This is spread on the fields or ploughed ground. It is used to neutralise the slightly acidic soil or even to make the soil slightly alkali. This is because the grass and vegetable crops often need different and pacific pH soils to grow well.
             After you are sick you have that burning feeling in your throat well that's hydrochloric acid from the stomach if too much is produced indigestion occurs and this is why people often take indigestion tablets. These tablets are bases such as magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate or aluminium hydroxide. These bases react with the acid neutralising it.

             An indicator is just a dye that changes colour. The dye changes colour depending on whether it is an acid or an alkali. Universal indicators are very useful combinations dyes, which give the colours shown below;
