Morality in society

As I believe many youths do I began to question the morality of society. All around me through the media and news especially I encountered the faces of horror-stricken children starving and dying in war drained countries, murders, rapes, and terrorism. However, people still work tediously to preserve the message that hope is not lost in this world we live in and that many good things still occur. This was the message I began to doubt.

I wasn’t simply averting my eyes from the good being done, because especially after the 9-11 attacks there has been plenty of that, but I was questioning if society was just so corrupt that the good

. . .

My group of friend’s fun had for the most part disintegrated by the time we reached Capitol Hill and was replaced with anger and frustration. However, in light of one day in the city of Washington, D. It completely changed my friend’s attitude and her smile was contagious.

I went to the city on a frigid gray day in October to celebrate my friends sixteenth birthday. It taught me that to fully understand a concept, such as this that individuals can make a difference, that people must work from the specific to the general. It improved our time together and affected others at the restaurant we ate at and then through the metro as we rode home. I of course have heard the success stories of individuals starting foundations and charities and changing the lives of hundreds, yet this seemed to pale in the face of so many people still not being helped. We were all at our wits end when a homeless man approached us and played a birthday song for my friend with his harmonica, upon hearing us comment on it. I truly felt as if doing service was just a poor attempt at building people’s self –esteem that our society seems overly obsessed with as well. Especially in today’s world it is essential to see how ideas connect, because all major events are more complex then one incident, such as war spurs from economic depression and oppression just as peace spurs from prosperity and freedom. That’s when I realized that the small things in life really do affect the big picture and one person can have a huge impact upon someone else’s life. Since as long as I can remember the idea of one person making a difference has been pressed upon me, however I didn’t really see that happening anywhere.
