I went to the city on a frigid gray day in October to celebrate my friends sixteenth birthday. It taught me that to fully understand a concept, such as this that individuals can make a difference, that people must work from the specific to the general. It improved our time together and affected others at the restaurant we ate at and then through the metro as we rode home. I of course have heard the success stories of individuals starting foundations and charities and changing the lives of hundreds, yet this seemed to pale in the face of so many people still not being helped. We were all at our wits end when a homeless man approached us and played a birthday song for my friend with his harmonica, upon hearing us comment on it. That’s when I realized that the small things in life really do affect the big picture and one person can have a huge impact upon someone else’s life. Since as long as I can remember the idea of one person making a difference has been pressed upon me, however I didn’t really see that happening anywhere.
