ALexander The Great: A True Hero

             It is difficult to provide an exact definition of leadership because every person holds their own opinions. The qualities a leader possesses are not always the same; they can vary according to the time in history he or she lived in, the problems that are occurring throughout that time period, and also the people whom the leader is leading. Alexander the Great possessed the qualities that would enable Greece to establish itself as the greatest power in the known world. His ambitious mind made it possible for him and his soldiers to conquer lands from Greece to India. Being the son of Philip of Macedon, he should have inherited his father's title; however, historians deemed the title of "the Great" more fitting for such an extraordinary person. His courageousness, military intellect, and ambition have proved that he is a definite leader and has the right to be called "Great."
             Without the courage that was evident in Alexander, the military may not have been as committed or obedient to him as they were. Besides commanding his men in battles, he also led them into the battles, being always in the front and in the middle of the battle. This showed tremendous bravery because he had the same chance of receiving a fatal wound as his men did. He was the last great military leader to do such a thing. Generals in modern times will usually lead their men from the rear. Although Alexander may have seemed invincible, surely he was not as he did receive wounds from battles. He was wounded in the neck and head at the Granicus River, in the thigh at Issus, and at the shoulder at Gaza. Alexander's courageousness was also shown by leading his army into many battles where he was greatly outnumbered by the opposing forces. While some leaders may have been reluctant to engage in such a battle due to the presence of fear, Alexander proceeded to take on the enemy and succeeded as well.
