The Russian Annexation of the Crimea, 1772-1783

The Russian Annexation of the Crimea 1772-1783 by Alan W. Fisher is a text that contains detailed research based on Russian and Ottoman archival documents, as well as primary and secondary sources relating to the subject. The study covers the political events from 1772 to 1783, and is an objective source for understanding not only the Crimean Tatars, but also the rivalry between the Russian and Ottoman empires. A rivalry which not only deeply affected the people of the Crimean peninsula, but also affected its surrounding areas. The grave importance of the Crimea was illustrated because of its access to the Black Sea. As a result, its coastal areas have played an important role throughout the history of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. As an economic area it served its importance through its trade, its grazing lands and also as an entrance into Eastern Europe. "As a political zone the Black Sea area was of prime importance to the power of those states which controlled it and its loss to a rival state was always a significant one." (Fisher, 2) As a result Byzantium, Kiev Rus, the Golden Horde, Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy have all tried throughout various periods of history to control the whole or indiv

(Fisher, 157) As a result, anti Russian flavor rose and during the Russian revolutions of 1917, Tater independence again took place. Although the Russian invasion proved unsuccessful, it did provide insight to the Crimea that Ottoman power and their ability to protect them was declining. It acted as a strong northern defense and allowed the supply of soldiers for campaigns in the east against Persia and in the west against the Hapsburg Empire and Poles. Treaties were established to further this control and decimate any of the remaining pressure the Ottoman Empire might have had. Suppressive Tsarist policy towards the Crimean Tatars, however, still took place and, as a result, hundreds of thousands of Crimean Tatars left the Crimea in waves of massive migrations. Under Catherine's power, Russia established a special form of government for the newly created province. With this uncertainty existing, revolts began to occur as military, economic and foreign relation reforms took place. As a result, Russian involvement again took place to insure its foothold within the Crimean State. She then followed through with the full annexation of the Crimea, declaring it as a Russian Province. Finally, "the cities in the Crimea were important economic and trading centers for the Ottomans and were noted especially for the quantity and quality of the Slavic slaves always available. Unfortunately, this puppet regime experienced massive revolts. The text illustrated that for the Ottoman Empire the loss of the Crimea was of utmost significance. After experiencing independence the Crimea was again invaded by the Russian empire. The priority was to establish a puppet regime that would take the place of the Crimean ruling party. The takeover and annexation of the Crimea to Russia was not an easy process.
