The Handmaids Tale Compared to the Diviners
On October twenty third, two thousand and two, 50 Chechen gunman and suicide bombers overtook a popular Moscow theatre, effectively removing seven hundred and fifty hostages from their lives in a manner which they could not control, much like the Offred from Margaret Atwood's novel, The Handmaid's Tale, and Morag from Margaret Laurence's novel, The Diviners. Morag was removed from a life she might have had when both her parents fell victim to Polio, and Offred was taken from her life by a radical change in the ruling government. They are both affected to different degrees, positively and negatively by the common theme of isolation, which in itself has underlying factors which include intentional, situational and coincidental isolation. Firstly, because of events beyond their control, both Morag and Offred are flung into new lives that separate them from those they had previously had. Offred was only spared a new life in the colonies as an unwoman because she had been married to a divorced man. In her previous life, breaking up Luke's marriage might have been frowned upon, but because of it she was qualified and selected to be the new societies
Contrary to Offred's forceful move into an unwanted situation, Morag's early life is spent in isolation of her own creation. 99-100)From this one can see that Offred's resort to fantasy is the act of a person who feels very alone and doesn't wish to stay that way. Also, although Offred continues to isolate herself from the government's world, she is at the same time joining another group, the unknown members of Mayday, which leads her to isolate herself further so as to protect her new interests. Since Morag had the choice to stay or leave the life she had, her distancing came at a much lower price compared to the mental anguish Offred had to suffer through. The effects were much worse for Offred because she was forced to be alone after having had a family; compared to Morag who was saved from her isolation by an obscure event that had happened more than a decade before. Then there will be an ending to the story, and real life will come after it. Because of this event Morag was effectively saved from the isolation she had experienced while married to Brooke. Meanwhile I must endure, keep myself safe for later. I'm not in any immediate danger, I'll tell you. 37- 38), where she had trusted the government, an opposite to her new outlook of resistance. It seemed that while Offred was forever toiling with how she could get back to her old life, Morag seems to have succumbed to her isolated life, and seemed very unwilling to part with it. Therefore, due to the common affliction of intentional, situational, and coincidental isolation which both Offred and Morag suffered through, it is evident that when considered collectively one can see that Offred's isolation was much more difficult to overcome because she was deprived her right to love, receive education, speak freely and live as an individual.
