Roles in History
Discrimination, whether motivated by differences in race, nationality, religion, or gender, prevents American citizens from experiencing true freedom. Discrimination has existed in many forms, both legally condoned and legally punishable, and has become a part of American history since the days our founding fathers wrote the constitution. When they wrote the famous words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, the God created all men equal," they probably weren't thinking of slavery, rulings of "separate but equal", and the Jim Crow laws. As a free Blackman in 1813, James Forten put it, "...they did not particularize white and black, because they never supposed it would be made a question whether we were men or not." In an episode of the television show "The Family Guy", the writers comment on discrimination by making a parody with the family dog, Brian, an articulate, mature, sophisticated pet, who undergoes traditional occurrences of discrimination. In this episode, entitled "Brian: Portrait of Dog", Brian gets harassed by police, refused service at local businesses, and is eventually imprisoned and sentenced to lethal injection. The episode starts at the Griffin's house, where the family is enduri
Brian goes to the dog show, does well, but toward the end of the competition, it is Brian's turn to beg for a treat. When Brian is taken home, he replies back to the cop, "O Lordy, Lordy, I'll never roam again" in a deep southern accent. I don't agree with what is happening, but there are still people, as ludicrous as it really is, or at least should be, that are as racist as their ancestors were one hundred years ago, and some of those people have strong ties to the government. " These words evoke a sense of urgency in this struggle. Women stood up and filled the positions in the war industry that couldn't be filled by the men at war. This is the first example of the other underlying message that you can't accept how the world treats you now, you must struggle for a better world. Young minorities must not listen to what popular media leads them to believe is the normal lifestyle. It is appalling that this is the hidden reality. The same power which protects the white man, should protect A MAN OF COLOUR. Similarly, in the movie "Boyz N the Hood", Tre and Ricky get pulled over by some discriminatory cops. As another example, in the beginning of the movie, Tre's father, Furious, hears an intruder and shoots at the door.
