BRAVE NEW WORLD

             The book I am going to examine for my specialist study is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. In this essay, I will be studying the author's views on society, which are expressed through both themes and characters.
             The world in which Huxley sets the novel is apparently very idealistic, in fact an utopia, and shows a society where everyone knows their place and sticks to it. This is because everyone in this world is programmed before birth to his or her place in society. Old age, sickness, war and fear of death have all been eliminated, however to have these advantages the world controller had to sacrifice aspects such as the love of nature, family life, literature, relationships and marriage. The aim of this society is contained within the world state motto, "Community, Identity, Stability". Anything that does not fit in or could interfere with these aims is then abolished.
             I feel that the main themes in which the author is trying to express in the novel are, the importance of happiness opposed to freedom, the importance of the needs of the individual compared with the needs of society at large and the concept of a totalitarian world government. These ideas were probably expressed due to the period in which Huxley was living and writing. Brave New World was published in 1932, which was when Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini were on the rise to power. They were all dictators that believed their ideologies should rule the world. Aldous Huxley is questioning whether or not any totalitarian ideology even communism or fascism can benefit human kind; because no matter what the benefits, there is no opposition allowed therefore there is no individual rights or freedom.
