BRAVE NEW WORLD
The book I am going to examine for my specialist study is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. In this essay, I will be studying the author's views on society, which are expressed through both themes and characters. The world in which Huxley sets the novel is apparently very idealistic, in fact an utopia, and shows a society where everyone knows their place and sticks to it. This is because everyone in this world is programmed before birth to his or her place in society. Old age, sickness, war and fear of death have all been eliminated, however to have these advantages the world controller had to sacrifice aspects such as the love of nature, family life, literature, relationships and marriage. The aim of this society is contained within the world state motto, "Community, Identity, Stability". Anything that does not fit in or could interfere with these aims is then abolished. I feel that the main themes in which the author is trying to express in the novel are, the importance of happiness opposed to freedom, the importance of the needs of the individual compared with the needs of society at large and the concept of a totalitarian world government. Our way of life is very much based on the culture we were brought up in. At the beginning, Bernard is lonely, insecure and isolated; he is trapped in a body of a lower caste and constantly feels that he is not given the respect that an Alpha deserves. In the savage reservation he is made fun of because his mothers sexual morality is totally at odds with the monogamy of the savage society. He is an outsider in the savage reservation and in the world state. They were all dictators that believed their ideologies should rule the world. Aldous Huxley shows us many of his ideas through the attitudes of his main characters. After September 11th last year, most American citizens were even scared to leave their houses and in result, there was an economic disaster as people staying away from shopping malls which affectively hit the American consumer economy. He has an idealised picture of her as a heroine but quickly dismisses her as a "strumpet". Although happiness is important, Huxley is trying to suggest that even more important are moral principles such as, equality, truth and fairness. For example, 40% of children in Scotland are born outside marriage, whereas in a Middle Eastern country the figure is almost zero. They all share the same beliefs that they should have the right to get angry, fall in love, experience anguish; things in which most people in this world could not even understand. We are manipulated by things such as television, the media, culture and the government, which subtly tell us how we should be living our lives, what sort of morals we should have and what sort of issues are suitable for discussion. However, Huxley is suggesting that the stability and personal happiness is fragile as because they very much depend on Soma, which induces happy feelings. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want goodness, and I want sin.
