Nubia

             In ancient times, the people living along the banks of the river Nile developed sophisticated civilizations. Ancient Egypt, stretching from the First Cataract to the Mediterranean Sea, is probably the most well known ancient culture in this area, and this group of people were called the Nubians. The Nubian's inhabited the area along the river Nile from the First Cataract south to the Sixth Cataract.
             At the present time there is no political entity called Nubia. Part of the area which was known as Nubia is in Eygept and the other part is in the Republic of the Sudan. A large part of the northern part of ancient Nubia currently lies submerged under the reservoir formed behind Egypt's High Dam at Aswan.
             During the warm season in Nubia the day temperature may reach up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. But during the rest of the year the overnight temperature drops to near the freezing point. In northern part of Nubia it is almost impossible to see any appreciable rain. However in the south part of Nubia, there is a raining season. It rains during the months July and August. The main climate condition that affected the Nubians was the prevailing winds. The prevailing winds can cause problems with agriculture fields and villages. But still there was a good thing about the prevailing winds, because year-round the winds blow from the north and because the current of the river flows in the opposite direction, the winds make it possible to navigate the Nile in both directions. This helped the Nubian in a lot of ways. It helped them to carry their food from different places and to travel easily.
             The Bronze Age is a long period, extending over almost 2,500 years. In this time there is much change in Nubia and its cultures. The Bronze Age follows the earlier Neolithic Period.
