Media Violence

Critically consider the view that the media might contribute to the development of aggressive behaviourThere has been an interest in the affects of violent media on the behaviour of children by psychologists. In 1993, Michael Medved published a book called 'Hollywood versus America' which triggered an increase in research. The book is about the film industry's 'obsession' with violence. Some actors then turned against violent movies and publicly showed their disgust of it. One of these was Sir Anthony Hopkins who won an oscar for playing the insane serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the film 'The Silence of the Lambs.' He told journalists in Cardiff, "Enough is enough. As an actor, I have some responsibility. We have seen some terrible things in Britain recently. It's a terrifying world we live in and I don't want to encourage that through my films." In experiments, children have copied violent acts that they have seen on TV. For example, in the 1960's a psychologist called Albert Bandura showed a video clip of someone acting aggressively to a bobo doll to some toddlers, and then put them in a room with a bobo doll. Some children were not exposed to the video clip, but the ones that were, acted more aggressively towa

This is different from other societies, so maybe these findings cannot be used on those. This creates a view of violent media 'lets off steam', safely by watching the violence. Surprisingly, the boys that had been watching the violent media were not affected, but the boys that had been watching non-violent media were more aggressive afterwards. Violent media is watched by almost everyone, and it seems like it's being used just to 'dump the blame on' for children being anti-social. These individuals could have been mentally unstable in the first place, so even without the exposure to violent media, they may of still become murderers eventually. After the introduction of TV to the island, the observations carried on for another five years and the data was compared. In 1888 he murdered quite a few people in a gory fashion. His attorney said it was due to 'subliminal television intoxication'. People who are deprived of this end up taking out their aggression physically. They were quickly caught because of the extensive CCTV footage they were caught on. Violent media just encouraged this behaviour. They tortured the toddler, and then eventually killed him. They found that there was no change in the behaviour of children after the introduction of TV. The first is that violent media 'corrupts' the minds of children, and makes them anti-social.
