Marriage Rituals

The word marriage means a socially recognized and approved union between two individuals of the opposite sex with the expectation of permanence and usually with the aim of producing offspring (Bahr, 1995). This definition of the word marriage is known throughout the world, but the rituals behind the wedding are not known to very many as rituals, but as tradition. Most people do not understand where wedding traditions originated from but continue to use them none the less. Such wedding rituals - wearing the white wedding dress, the cake, the flowers, throwing of the rice, wearing veils, the best man, the maid of honour (or the bride's maid), and most importantly the exchange of the wedding rings - are not known for their significance, but known only because they are tradition. This essay will help define what the significance is behind the many wedding rituals, or traditions still used today. There are many wedding rituals that are a very important part of the wedding itself, one of these being the wedding dress. Women would spend many weeks, sometimes even many months looking for that perfect wedding dress. It must be the perfect look and style. Women usually look for the most beautiful white wedding dress. This, however, has n

The honeymoon is probably the wedding ritual that people know the least about. The maid of honour supplied the bride with food and attending to her other needs. The word "honeymoon" comes from a medieval custom in northern-European countries. The most enduring reason for retaining the best man even today is for friendship. When you think about wedding cakes nowadays, the last thing that you would think about would be fertility. But it was not always seen as the colour of the wedding dress. In the olden days, the groom would steal his bride from her tribe. Hopefully you have learnt how and why these rituals are still used today and that now you can pass them down so that they will not simply be traditions, but will have some meaning behind them. The maid of honour is still used today for much the same reason, but was not always used for such a reason. This is why it is still used today to trim wedding bouquets. Roses are the flowers of love, therefore being very popular. Guests throw rice at the bride and groom as a wish for children and a good life. When you think of wedding cakes you think of beautiful tiered cakes, which are beautifully decorated, almost to the point of not wanting to touch them because you do not want to destroy them. In ancient times, the bridal flowers represented the wish of fertility. You want to go into this new life with the purest love and the want of being youthful, so using the colour white has stayed the traditional colour.
