Rhinoceros
I must say I enjoyed this book more than the last couple. It is full of the usual Forbes' cliches, but the plot is different to the usual megalomaniac style. The ending is rather silly and far-fetched, and obviously reflects Forbes' own prejudices, but that is his right as an author, I suppose. The usual racist undertones are never far below the surface. For instance, a lot of the baddie muscle types are referred to as refugees, normally 'from the East' and I don't think he means Lowestoft! This is similar to Sinister Tide, where the title itself referred to 'Eastern hordes'. To stereotype displaced persons in this way is blatantly racist, and cannot be defended. Sorry, Colin, but it's true.Paula, or rather the portrayal of her, in this book is particularly irritating at times. For instance, on more than one occasion she does not get her own way and stamps her feet in frustration. For an adult woman in her forties, with quite a high-powered job, I don't find this credible. Talking of her age, Forbes has her 'in her late thirties'. I'm sorry, but having been 29 in 1985, in 2000 she must now be 43 or 44. Not that author's can't have licence to do this, of course. And we have the obligatory 'Paula doing her own thing' sketch,
In technical terms it approaches the high days of the 1980s, only let down by the silly ending. However, although he has grasped mobile technology, he still seems to have some way to go in looking at the Internet. The internet is seen a threat undermining the moral fibre of modern people. Has the end of the Cold War and the settling down of Russia been a handicap for CF? A lack of good material and ideas?Rhinoceros in the top five of CF books?. The missiles shooting across the screens could have been some fancy screen saver he'd seen. For anyone who liked Forbes' earlier books but has gone off them recently due to the plots being very similar, I would recommend this book and would rate this as one of the top five books by Colin Forbes. The well written plot is one which finally does justice to the well loved characters. Suspend your disbelief, and buy!I'll start by saying that I liked this book a lot, it was certainly worth the wait. When I was about quarter of the way in to this book I stopped and thought , 'I don't know what the hell's going on here', but then I realised that with a good book I'm not supposed to. I too hate being questioned over a descision that has been carefully taken. I would certainly say that this is the best book Forbes has written in a long time, I think this is better than The Sisterhood, which was one of his best books recently. ' Yet these comments again don't seem to apply to the likes of Otto Kuhlmann and any other foreigners that help Tweed's team. Also some of the characters are like cartoon versions of the people they're meant to be i. It started with Mark Wendover arriving in London. True it has it's bad points, but it's good points far outweigh the bad.
