Eating Disorders

Over 30 years ago eating disorders were rare, and got very little publication, or advertisement. Today eating disorders can be seen in magazines, websites, even the daily news we hear about young girls who have died from these disorders. Why has the incidence of these increased so dramatically? Why have so many young women, and some men, developed bizarre eating habits to the point of endangering their emotional and physical health? Most importantly what are these disorders, what are the causes of them, and what are the signs that someone may have this disorder?

To some women, being thin becomes the most important thing in life regardless of what it might do to their health. ““Being thin became the most import thing in my life,” admitted 34-year-old Ann. Her fear of being overweight led to a greatly restricted diet and the loss of 60 pounds in a short time. “She became skin and bones and looked as if she had come out of a concentration camp,” her husband said.1” Why do women go to these extremes?

Obesity often results, since compulsive overeaters generally do not purge themselves of the food. 90 percent of TV, and movie actors and actresses are thin as can be, and have more make up them than clothes, and it makes it hard for the women not to want to look, and want to be like them, when they see their boyfriends, or husbands gawking at them and putting their pictures and posters up (mainly teenage boys, but some men). It is not caused by physical illness. Feels out of control and unable to stop eating during binges. The constant concern of the bulimic is body shape and weight. Dieting may represent avoidance of, or ineffective attempts to cope with, the demands of a new life stage such as adolescence. This condition leads to significant weight loss.
