A Character Comparisson on the Canterbury Tales

            Is Religion Always Held Sacred?
             The Canterbury Tales contains many different characters and characteristics of people. Chaucer does a very good job at describing and creating all of the characters. Each person stands out in his or her own different way. Also, the tales that they tell match the characters' personalities and ways of behaving. Everyone in The Canterbury Tales exhibits many differences and similarities. Religion and morals seem to be some of the most common similarities between Chaucer's characters, but just as they are the same, they are also different.
             The Priest and the Friar display many similarities. Of those similarities, there is one main idea that ties them together. That idea is religion. Both of them are traveling priests and preach the work of God. Back in the period in which this story was written, religion plays a very important role in society. The priest and the friar serve a very important part in the community. As priests, they are to spread religion and help people find the path to holiness. They may seem alike in many multiple ways, but their characteristics and personalities separate these two greatly.
             The both of them are religious, but they are at both ends of the spectrum. On one hand, there is the priest. He is a poor, kind, and giving man. "He taught the lore of Christ and of His 12 Apostles, but first he followed it himself," (page# 12 ) this quote from Chaucer is best fit to describe the teachings and devotion of the priest. The priest was also a stationary man, he live in one place and was fine staying in one area. The friar, on the other hand, was a traveling priest and spread the word of God with him. The priest was a very simple kind of person. He did not need many possessions and belongings to make himself happy. If money did happen to come upon his way, he would instantly turn it over to charity. The friar is the exact opposite. He is always spending money on himse...
