Biography of Joseph Stalin

The greatest Soviet dictator to ever live. Joseph Stalin was the man of steel for thirty years. He first entered politics in February 1912 when he was appointed to serve on the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party. When he started, Stalin wanted to overthrow the monarch and divide the large feudal estates into small, private capitalistic peasant holdings but as time progressed and as Stalin moved up the political ladder, Russia began to take its communist shape. Joseph Stalin had turned the Soviet Union into a great superpower but all this had come with a price, a price which was placed on After the death of Lenin. Stalin began to change agriculture and industry. He believed that the Soviet Union was behind everyone else and to correct this he introduced "command economy" or the Five Year Plan, which forced farmers and industry to modernize. More tractors were built and power stations were developed to supply farms with electricity. Production of coal, steel and iron were increased and Stalin also had plans for firms and businesses. "Business and factories were given a target that they had

Stalin was the only one to stop this and did so by leading his people to victory. (Die, But Do Not Retreat, 1993) Stalin was able to gather his remaining military and encourage his people into battling the Nazi. "Those who opposed these rules were sent to slave labor camps for ten years or more with little food. The Nazi invasion was very successful due to Stalin's purges of the Red Army. Although the economy was seeing great times, the people suffered under Stalin's rule. Those who were lucky enough to survive collectivization and the great purges still had to live a life of fear and uncertainty around every corner. On May 7, the USSR, together with the Western Allies, accepted the surrender of Germany. "With great power, comes great responsibility". (Sakharov, 1997) Stalin had created "an elaborate bureaucratized administrative machinery based on the interlinking of the Communist Party". Many died because of exhaustion at the labor camps. (Francis, 1999) This interlinking of the communist party included ministries, legislative bodies, trade unions, political police, and armed forces. The Soviets drove the Nazi's out of the Soviet Union and launched a counter attack on Berlin. (Sakharov, 1997) Stalin had terrorized large segments of the Soviet population, such as the prosperous farmers called Kulaks who had their farms forcibly taken away.
