When the black regiment was first formed the leaders had no intention of letting them fight. They were not going to get uniforms and were not equipped with proper foot ware. They were only used for manual labor. They also were going to be paid reduced wages.
The big turning point in the movie was when Col. Robert Gould Shaw informed his men that they were going to receive less pay because they were black. The character played by Denzel Washington was outraged. He said that he was “not going to take no slave wage”. He tore them up. Others began to do the same. Some might ask why the whites did not want the blacks to fight.
The movie portrays most of the black soldiers as former slaves. In the movie they show this when Shaw and his regiment journey off with Montgomery and his group of black soldiers. I believe that they thought the blacks were incompetent savages. They come to a town that has only innocent civilians, mostly women and children. This is when the men gained a lot of respect for him. After the fact Shaw learned that Montgomery had been acting under direct orders from Major Gen. n would fight without pay, then he would also fight without pay. They were difficult to use and not very good weapons. Their men were dieing left and right.
Another discrepancy is when Shaw had to threaten the Union Quartermaster to get his men shoes. In reality it was Shaw who decided that his men would not take the lowered wage.
