Abstract Expressionism

CENTERED IN NEW YORK , 1946 TO 1960’S

It is a modern art movement that flowered in America after 2. World War and held its popularity until Pop Art in 1960’s.With this movement New York replaced Paris as the center of the art world.

WHO WERE THE MAJOR ARTISTS OF THE MOVEMENT?

WHAT WERE THESE ARTISTS TRYING TO ACHIEVE?

Their goal was raw , impulsive art. What mattered were the qualities of the paint and the act of painting itself

This movement of art is the artist’s expressing himself via color and form. We are not represented a concrete subject by the artists. Inspite of its similarities with expressionism this form of art is far more full of enthusiasm, tension and frustration. However much absract they are , they stay far from the idea of picture therefore art becomes a tool of introspection and self-freedom and seeks an answer for Wols’ question:

“IS EVERYTHING WE SEE IS A FAKE?IF SO DON’T WE HAVE TO LOOK INTO OURSELVES BEFORE ANYTHING

. . .
Traditionally sublime was a genre of 19th century art in which the power of nature revealed the character of God. That’s why I think that this movement has abolished the passive role of the audience who used to see the finished object which is the traditional artistic approach. Artists began to explore color and shape and paint entire canvas orange or blue was not an odd thing to do. With no rules, many creative minds could explore ideas freely_for example the splish splash creations of folks like Jackson POLLOCK;therefore, they emphasized the importance of the act of creating, not of the finished object. ELSE?”

BIRTH OF THE MOVEMENT

After World War 2,with images of Holocoust everywhere they turned,it seemed reduntant for socially aware artists to paint these same images,a photography at the time was much more powerful. One of the important developments associated with the colour field Absract Expressionists is the creation of a 20th ceentury sublime. The painting composed by Pollock had a number for a name and I was both intrigued and irritated by the work. Mark Rothko’s enormous field of color expressed both the spiritual and monumental concerns of the time. At once,I could see what had been there all along. century Artists of USA was Abstract Expressionism, moreover this movement painting is like meditation for both the artists and audiences by its attempt to make both sides confess and think.

o The attempt to transfer pure emotion directly onto the canvas.

The dominant trend in western painting throughout the 1950’s began with a handful of American artists later termed Abstract Expressionists. As in the pictures we have discussed, when we consider the pieces, they seem quiet irregular, and tiring however when we go back 2 or 3 feet back and consider the whole canvas,we come across concise signals of life they seem as if living. In its defense,he had painted out that, while there was no direct representational object from real life presented in the work, the entire painting was itself consistently and necessarily aware of being made of paint. Together with Ad Reinhardt,Lee Krasher,Barnett Newman, and Elain de Kooning, these painters expanded the possibilities of the medium.
