Media effects on children

             The causes of youth violence are numerous and complex. Neurological, hormonal, and mental abnormalities can produce highly increased aggressions in many cases, but environmental contexts that encourage the learning of aggressions also play a key role. Indeed, child who grows up within an environment that supports and reinforces aggressions will most likely develop certain "reservedly aggressive reactions" to new situations (Steyer 15). Obviously, television is one place where children can witness many examples of human aggressions. Numerous numbers of researches have proved that children can learn violent behaviors on films, crimes-reported news and music (which sometimes contain either or both explicit language using and violence-suggested video clip). In fact, Huesmann and his colleagues, in their studying, have found that "heavily exposures to televised violence at age 8 significantly predict adult criminals some 20 years later" (qt. in Steyer 18). Nevertheless, despite these researches' results, some critics believe that television violence only make children passive, instead of violent.
             Also focusing on this topic, the following four contemporary writers, Ted Gest, Farah Stockman, Aisha K. Finch and Barbara Kingsolver sought to explain and demonstrate the many effects of television upon youth viewers. Based on their works, in this paper, I will try to evaluate and emphasize the very extents to which many televised programs might access and affect children's behaviors during their early cognitional learning processes. My approaches will include analysis on three main types of televised programs: news, movies, and music.
