J.K. Rowling was born on July 31st, 1965 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, England. Rowling has been writing since the age of 5 or 6. She attended Exeter University, where she studied French. Rowling became a bilingual secretary but she decided it was not for her and resumed her passion for writing literature. She moved to Portugal, married, and had a daughter. She shortly became divorced, and moved back to the United Kingdom with her daughter. She received a grant from the Scottish Arts council to complete her book. The book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was eventually bought by the Bloomsbury Company. The rights to Harry Potter were bought in the US by Arthur A Levine Books/Scholastic Press. In the United States, this book was renamed to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Upon announcement of the first movie being made, people actually bought tickets to movies just to see the theatrical trailer of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. detested Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This first movie even managed to edge out The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, another huge success.
