He did many things for them, like bring in huge amounts of ivory and they also liked this. Several characters even mention all things that Kurtz coul
He was "in charge of a trading post, a very important one, in the true ivory country" (pg 84). He was once praised as an honorable man, but he became a thief, a murderer, and much more. Kurtz went to the jungle mainly to make money to return to Europe and marry his intended. This is what happened to Kurtz because he had the most potential. To everyone, Kurtz was " a universal genius" (pg 151). This is showing that Kurtz values money more than people. Her people had disapproved of this when they heard. In return he just stopped caring about the natives and how they thought of him. The farther you climb the farther you fall. Most importantly, he failed in getting back to Europe. In every sense of the word, Kurtz was indeed a failure. Kurtz died knowing that he was a failure and says it best in his last words: " the horror, the horror" (pg 153). Kurtz despised his job and the jungle, but money kept him from leaving.
