Napoleon Bonaparte

On December 2, 1804 the sweet-talking, crowd-charming Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor of France. The Revolution just coming to a close, left mass chaos and disorder throughout the nation. The people no longer cared about the little freedom they had gained from the bloody revolution. They were willing to elect a monarch in order to calm the chaos-stricken country. They voted overwhelmingly in favor of Napoleon being crowned emperor 3,572, 329 to 2,569.

It did not take long for the new ruler to begin acting the part of royalty. Soon after his election he even began signing documents with only his first initial as leaders of the past had. Napoleon began his rule in a way that shocked all who that attended the coronation. In order to show everyone that he was in no way under another’s authority, he took the crown and placed it on his own head.

This fairly short, arrogant-looking man was said to have a kind of air about him that demanded obedience and respect. The men that served closest to him claimed he had a fire in his deep-set eyes.

Napoleon’s first move was against the Netherlands so he would not leave his rear exposed during his campaign in July. The people of France began to miss the excitement Napoleon brought. The country was in a terrible economic depression. Finally, at Moscow the Russians stood their ground. A group of conservatives began to rise. Russia began allowing English imports and thus its alliance with France. In reality he circled around to help the Duke of Wellington on another front.

Napoleon was placed at the head of the government and named First Consul.

Since he could not get England to fight on land and he dare not fight her at sea, Napoleon turned to economic warfare. Yes, he was prideful and did many foolish things. This time he would be going into Russia. Finally, in 1811, a serious depression struck the nation of France and Napoleon was forced to allow certain English imports into the country. And so the two countries prepared for war.
