On the third day of August, 1866, Gen. Phillip Sheridan, commander of the military division of the Gulf of Mexico, was assigned the duty of creating a regiment of "colored" cavalry. This would be designated the 9th regiment, and would be the beginning of a storied history involving the Buffalo Soldiers.The buffalo soldiers were African-American men and women, fighting for our country during the vulnerable times when it was needed it most. No doubt is the fact that serving one's country and giving one's life is the ultimate sacrifice to make. The question is, why did African-Americans put their lives on the line in and for a country that denied them every opportunity. That inquiry still isn't clearly answered, but one thing is for sure. Without the Buffalo Soldiers, the American military would've been lacking heart, strength and remarkable fighting skills. They stood up to the resilience of not only their opponents, but many of their own countrymen due to the issue of skin color. The Buffalo Soldiers dealt with life in rundown villages and poorly ventilated, vermin infested hovels. Due to these conditions, crippling diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, bronchitis, and tuberculosis were a common problem.
In New Mexico, the Buffalo Soldiers participated in campaigns against Victorio, Geronimo, and Nana. So I hit the books, and what I found was clearly worth the attention that Marley gave it. I must admit, the first time I was truly intrigued by the story of the Buffalo Soldiers was at a time when I didn't expect to be captivated by their story. the work performed by these troops is most arduous, horses worn to mere shadows, mennearly without boots, shoes and clothing. That the loss in horses may be understood when following the Indians inthe Black Range the horses were without anything to eat five days except what they nibbled from piņon pines, goingWithout food so long was nearly as disastrous as the fearful march into Mexico of 79 hours without water, all this by forced marches over inexpressibly rough trails. The lyrics also captivated me, as the story was told briefly, but the message was clear. Some of the lyrics in the song were as follows: (chorus) "I'm just a Buffalo Soldier In the heart of America Stolen from Africa, brought to America Said he was fighting on arrival Fighting for survival Said he was a Buffalo Soldier Win the war for America"I suppose it's not crazy to think an 18-year old would be affected by a musician as legendary as Mr. For over 20 years, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments served on the western frontier from Montana to Texas, along the Rio Grande in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and the Dakotas.
