50 states

When I proclaimed to my parents that I wanted our family to visit all fifty States together, little did I realize that this journey would have such an impact on my life. At only eight years old, I knew little more than my small town of Glencoe, Illinois and its surroundings. Now that my family and I have visited forty-nine states, with only Alaska left to explore, I have seen firsthand how our country is so dynamically diverse in people, cultures, and geography. As a result of my travels, I have become tolerant, enlightened, and respectful. These trips have also inspired me to be more involved in the community I live in, and have stimulated my interest in an education in business.

These trips have opened my eyes to not only the wonders of this country, but also the hardships its citizens face everyday. These travels introduced me to impoverished sections of the United States. I have seen people living on the streets, or in old houses with only one room. Seeing this triggered something inside of me, a feeling that I wanted to do whatever I could to help. I became involved in social action projects to try to do my part. Every month I am involved in the Help the Homeless program at my temple, which makes over 500 lunches

. . .

On my vacations, I have seen many different businesses, whether it was a tour of the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, or meeting with the CEO of Delta Airlines in Atlanta. My brother and I founded The Finest of New York Fund, a charity that sent all of the donations we received to the New York City Police and Firefighters Widows and Children benefit fund. I have been able to see the Container Store headquarters in Dallas and meeting with the former CFO of Wal-Mart at their corporate offices in Bentonville, Arkansas. Each month I assist in getting the necessary supplies, making sandwiches, packing the lunches and then delivering them downtown. Through meeting with CEOs and CFOs, I have not only learned how businesses become and stay successful, but have been able to combine it with learning how these businesses can assist people and entire communities in need. Through car washes, bake sales, ribbons and collection boxes throughout town, everyone was able to do their part, and in helping organize this, I knew I had made a difference in at least one family’s lives, and I still felt that I needed to do more. The fund gives the money to families of the Police and Firefighters lost on September 11th. At Emory University, the ability to enter the business school as an undergraduate is the best possible way for me to get my formal business education underway,

. Through all these different experiences, I have gained an insight as to what makes a business successful and why others have failed in similar situations, as well as the qualities that makes these CEOs great leaders. History, English, math, economics, Spanish and statistics all relate to business, and I have already figured out different ways to use material from each subject.

I am more tolerant, enlightened, and respectful because of my travels.

The poverty and homelessness I have seen while traveling could never have prepared me for the events of September 11th 2001. What interested me the most about business from my trips is how much of it relates to what I have learned in my junior year and what I am learning in my senior year of high school. Although this program feeds 500 people each month, I felt that I could personally do more on my own. These journeys have motivated me to do more for others in need, and have helped me choose a career in business.
