On December 30, 1975, Eldrick T. Woods was born in southern California. To a retired U.S. army lieutenant, by then name of Early Woods, Earl's wife, Kaltida, a native from the country of Thailand. The nickname, Tiger, was given to Eldrick after on e of Earl's friends, Vuong Dang Phong, a Vietnamese solider that died in the war. Young Tiger Woods at the age of six months, watches his father hitting and swinging golf balls in their backyard, in California, and decides to imitate his swing and he hits the golf ball. In 1978, when Tiger was two years old, he appears on the Mike Douglas Show. With guest star comedian Bob Hope, also being on the show, Bob Hope decides to take young Tiger on in a putting contest. Tiger actually beats Bob Hope by two shots in the putting contest. One year later, when Tiger is now three years old, his father, Earl, takes Tiger to the Navy Golf Course, in Cypress, California, where Tiger scores an amazing forty-eight on nine holes. "At that moment I knew my son had an amazing coordination for the game of golf, and I also realized that I need to keep on him, and to encourage him to keep playing," said Earl Woods. In 1981, at the age of five, Tiger Woods appears in Golf Digest, and is a guest star on ABC's, That's Incredible. In 1984, Tiger at the age of eight now, qualifies for the Optimist International Junior Championship. Amazingly being the youngest player in the tournament comes out with the victory. Tiger again wins this tournament at the ages of nine, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and then for the fourth year in a row, when he is fifteen. At the age of fifteen, in 1991, Tiger Woods also becomes the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur Champion.
