Although a lot of fighting takes place, it is not something he enjoys. Commodus was evil and took his power too far. Both men had a point where they were going to give into the subject they stood up for. Maximus Kills the soldiers that are sent out to kill him, but becomes seriously wounded. When Maximus finds his deceased family he laid there to die with them. At the beginning of the film, the current emperor, and head of the Roman Legions, Marcus Arelius, tells Maximus he loved him and he would want to see Rome become a senate once again.

As a gladiator his role was to stay alive. his actions are halted and he dies for the goodness of his name. He admits and then is asked to sign his name on a document. He refuses to confess because he knows the truth.

John Proctor had an affair with Abigail that he was very shameful of and strongly regrets. Proctor believed that he and other people should not submit to the mass hysteria that was tearing his town apart.

Maximus was a very loyal and courageous character. Maximus defeated Commodus in the fight.
