It seems like there is always a trend in unimaginably horrible acts of violence that is trendy at a certain point in time. What was it a while back? Postal workers? It was almost trendy to work at the post office and... well... go postal, killing as many people as you could before running out of ammo or being stopped. What else was there? Drive-by's were pretty popular for a while there. And now a days? What is it? Is it cool to be a disgruntled teenager who cannot deal with the pressure of growing up and therefore feels the need to not only kill himself but also to take classmates with him? It seems like every few months it happens again and is reported by the media so cliched and so unemotional that the viewers find it hard to distinguish between shootings. The main reason that school shootings cannot be predicted is because there is no pattern of previous behavior leading up to the incident. Only one characteristic has been evident in every school shooting to date. The shooters have all been boys. Obviously there is a problem here. Experts say that there very well could be such a disorder out there, but that the number of children being diagnosed with it is incredible. Studies show that the underlying cause of school shootings could be the same reason that the marines barred Eric Harris from enlisting; the prescribed drugs. Kip Kinkel had also been on Prozac. Most officials try to solve the problem of school shootings by increasing security, which more often than not means the installation of metal detectors (Rappoport).
