The River Tees Canoe Journey

The source of the River Tees is in the Pennine Mountains. It is NNW of North York Moors and is in the east of Lake District. The mouth of the river is in the North Sea. It starts on a marshy moor where there is a huge amount of rainfall each year. It gets approximately 1200mm of rainfall each year. The marsh soaks up water like a sponge but there is too much water to be soaked. The land here is often used for pastoral farming and also for tourist hikes. This turns into a stream and then becomes the source of the River Tees.
The most suitable place to start is near the source in the V-shaped valleys. The V-shaped valleys are formed from vertical erosion. This is because the river is trying to get to sea level. As the river cuts down, the steep sides are cut by weathering. This breaks and loosens the soil. The loosened material is washed away by rainwater and the river slowly carries it away.
At this stage of the journey the depth of the stream will be very shallow and there will be a lot of rocks and bed-load in the river. If you pick some rocks out of the river you will find that they are very large and angular because the river has not had time to wear it away. It will also be very hard to canoe since the width of the river will be small. The turbulence should be fast because it is the starting point of the river.
As we move downstream we will find a new landform, a waterfall. At this point we will have to get out of the canoe and use the path next to the waterfall to go to the bottom. Waterfalls are formed when Water from the river flows over the hard rock. Where the water flows over soft rock, it can erode or wear this softer rock away. Over time this soft rock is eroded more and more by the water flowing over it. This makes a cliff which the water topples over. At the bottom of the cliff some of the water splashes onto the cliff and makes a plunge pool by a process known as undercutting. A gorge which is a st
