The River Tees Canoe Journey

The source of the River Tees is in the Pennine Mountains. It is NNW of North York Moors and is in the east of Lake District. The mouth of the river is in the North Sea. It starts on a marshy moor where there is a huge amount of rainfall each year. It gets approximately 1200mm of rainfall each year. The marsh soaks up water like a sponge but there is too much water to be soaked. The land here is often used for pastoral farming and also for tourist hikes. This turns into a stream and then becomes the source of the River Tees. The most suitable place to start is near the source in the V-shaped valleys. The V-shaped valleys are formed from vertical erosion. This is because the river is trying to get to sea level. As the river cuts down, the steep sides are cut by weathering. This breaks and loosens the soil. The loosened material is washed away by rainwater and the river slowly carries it away.At this stage of the journey the depth of the stream will be very shallow and there will be a lot of rocks and bed-load in the river. If you pick some rocks out of the river you will find that they are very large and angular because the river has not had time to wear it away. It will also be very hard to canoe since the width of the ri

It looses energy and so must deposit the load it is carrying. Meanders are formed when the river swings from side to side seeking the most efficient and downhill course, given its limited scope for erosion. One of the meanders of the Tees encloses a whole town: the town of Yarm. It is only 18 kilometers from the sea as the crow flies. In Victorian times, Stockton, further downstream, took over Yarm's industrial role. Yarm was once a centre of shipbuilding and sail-making. But it was a struggle for ships to get this far upstream. The turbulence should be fast because it is the starting point of the river. The shape of the meander therefore develops by narrowing at the neck and extending at the outer curves. But Yarm is no longer an industrial centre. Farm produce was exported to London and the European mainland. These protect the surrounding towns. This can lead to really serious floods because the water cannot drain back into the river.
