Arranged Marriage
In the book Arranged Marriages, Divakaruni shows that other cultures have glorified vision of America, instead of seeing the harsh reality and problems that do exist. Through out the short stories Divakaruni has many examples of people from India coming to America with glorified images and ideas of what they will find. Only to find out the harsh reality that America isn't a glorious wonderland like they had imagined. Proof of this glorified American image first appears in the short story Clothes. When Sumita mistakes the meaning of the phrase on a t-shirt that her husband secretly buys her. The advertisement says "Great America." It's an add for a local amusement park. But Sumita mistakes it for describing her new country that she considers to be some great mystical land. From his condition Meera realizes that there is horrible unimaginable abuse happening in her great country. Her idea of a perfect American culture was changed. Until her uncle beat her and her aunt. In the next story Silver Pavements, Golden Roofs proof of a glorified vision of America comes directly from the title. In this story the main character thinks that she has the ideal "American life. After her husband is murdered at the store in which he worked. It almost seemed like she had lost faith in the country that she admired so much when the legal issues appeared. But when she finds a young boy that changes. For the first part of the story Jayanti, is fascinated by the American people, food, and even simple phrases such as "no problem. America is thought to be a rich land where everything is gold and silver. She got it from a song she knew as a child. It's an association made by the main character, Jayanti. Some are to high and only end with disappointment of the character. Jayanti also had to face things that to her were unheard of. But unlike other characters she finds out that most of the things she knows are just rumors and stereotypes.
