Antigone
"I will bury the brother I love, even if it means death" (Sophocles). In spite of the fact that ancient Greece was a male dominate society, the play Antigone by Sophocles, presents one women as being brave, courageous, and having the ability of establishing her own decisions. This woman is Antigone, daughter of former king Oedipus, who comes to the conclusion that her moral values are important enough to die over due to the death of her brother Polyneices. Creon, king of Thebes, considered Polyneices to be a traitor. Creon made a clear announcement stating that "no traitor to the kingdom will be given a proper burial, but instea
For this reason Antigone goes against Creon's law and buries her deceased brother. d left on the ground to rot" (Sophocles). For instance, the love for her brother is certainly made definite through her actions. However, Antigone's loyalty is due to the fact that she believes Polyneices has been treated unfairly because he did not receive a proper burial. If we must lose, let's lose to a man at least" (Sophocles). The next one is having no respect for authority. It's also obvious that Creon places men on a higher pedestal then women, therefore, leaving Antigone with many strikes against her to go along with her crime. These situations changed history for the better. There are also other situations in history where rebelliousness is necessary and good because it can impact many lives. The first one is simply being a woman in general. In addition, Tubman helped free thousands of slaves through the Underground Railroad. Even though Antigone's battle with Creon led to her death, her situation has made a difference for the better. By reading this statement one can assume that Creon's primary concern is winning.
