Music

             We have only been in this class for about a week but I am already learning things about music that I had to idea about before this class. There is more to music than what everyone thinks. From the different types of instruments to the composers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. So many different things. In this paper I am going to briefly discuss some of the things we have learned in these beginning chapters of the text book.
             First of all, in every sound there is a pitch. Pitch is the relative highness or lowness that we hear in a sound. The distance between the lowest and highest pitches that a sound or an instrument can produce is call its pitch range or just its range. In music there are degrees of loudness or softness that are called dynamics. Dynamics are the second property of sound as pitch was the first. The third property of sound is called tone color. Tone color allows us to tell a trumpet from a flute when they both are playing the same tone at the same dynamic level.
             There are different ranges in people's voices when they sing. The four we discussed are soprano and alto (women) and tenor and bass (male). When The voice can be used as an instrument. An instrument can be anything that produces musical sounds. There are seven classifications of instruments: woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, keyboards, electronic and voice. There are different types of all these instruments.
             There 3 textures of music: monophonic, polyphonic and homophonic.
             Monophonic is the texture of a single unaccompanied melodic line. It literally means one
             sound. Two or more melodic lines of relatively equal interests performed at the same time produce polyphonic texture. Polyphonic simply means many-sounding. The last one, Homophonic is when we hear one main melody with chords.
