Reaction Paper

Cynthia is a 23 year old Sergeant in the Marine Corps. She is from a Mormon family, but is not religious herself. She has never been married, but is in a serious relationship with someone who is not actively religious either. She plans to make the Marines a career.

Cynthia believes that people are religious because they have a natural need to believe in something. She explains that if people did not believe in a higher being, there would be no explanation for our existence. She feels that people wouldn’t feel as though they had a purpose in life.

Brandon is a 24 year old Sergeant in the Marine Corps. He is from Shelby, Montana. He does not actively practice any religion, but is a Christian. He is not presently involved with anyone and does plan to make a career out of the Marine Corps.

It is not important which religion a person will follow, as long as they have something to fall back on. This relieves a large burden off the shoulder of many people who would otherwise not be able to cope with their problems.

I believe that religion serves all these purposes. She is also planning to be a Career Marine. She is Catholic and is in a relationship with another Marine who is also Catholic. The second points out that it is natural that when someone feels that they have lost all hope, they lean on the fact that God made things this way because it was His will. Although, I believe that if people didn’t believe in God, they would rely on the scientific explanation. The third response points out that people rely on what they were taught as they were raised. If the parents were devote church-going Catholics, then the child is bound to follow in their footsteps. The most important part is that they believe in some higher being so that they have the comfort in knowing that someone is helping in their daily lives and will be there for them in the after-life. Both of them are currently active in the Church. This provides an extra amount of civility throughout the world in that they not only have to be careful for the local laws, they must also be concerned with the laws of their higher being in fear they may not be given the better after-life. She goes on to say that they need to feel there is something more after death.
