Down to the Wire

One warm Sunday night on the edge of town in Durant, Mississippi, the final game of the state soccer tournament to decide the best team in the state of Mississippi was about to be played. There was no humidity in the air. It was perfect soccer weather. Lining the field were parents and spectators from around the state to watch the game. Lights on the sides of the field showed the well-cut, deep green grass. The line markings on the field were freshly painted and clearly visible. The field looked fantastic.

In the final game, the Tupelo Hit men would be facing the hometown Durant Assault for the championship. Both teams were very tired coming into the finals. They had both played a game Friday night, three games Saturday, and one earlier that day to make it to the finals. The Hit men were undefeated in the tournament when they started the game. The Assault had lost one game, but had enough points to advance out of their bracket to the semi-finals.

One of the players for the Assault was Brian Sullivan. Brian was an average height young man of eighteen years with brown hair that came down to his eyes. He was a defender who loved to play the game. The fun factor and competitive nature of the game is what Brian
