Miss Brill

The main idea in the sort stories Miss Brill, by Katherine Mansfield is to show empathy and understanding of the lady. This story is written so cleverly that we understand sympathy and pity for Miss Brill, through close observations of things around her.In Miss Brill, Katherine Mansfield created a character that evoked my empathy. Miss Brill was so alone that she alleviated her loneliness by creating an alternative reality for herself. Miss Brill enjoys her habitual outing to the Seaside Park every Sunday, but

"She had become really quite expert, she thought at listening as though she didn't listen, at sitting in other people's lives for a minute while they talked around her". Therefore enabling an inner meaningfulness to the short story and depth to our brain's analysis. In the climax of the story, Miss Brill is awakened from her illusion when she hears the words of a young couple she is intently listening to, ""Why does she come here at all, who wants her? Why doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?" In an instant, Miss Brills alternative reality crashes around her and she is forced to realize that she is not in anyway important to the people in the park but a lonely old woman, regardless of what she has chosen to imagine. "In conclusion Katherine Mansfield created a wonderful short story, full of meaning. As the narrator states, "Oh how fascinating it was! How she loved sitting here, watching it all!" It is through the very focused view of Miss Brill's thoughts that we understand her loneliness. She is a magnificent writer and allowed us to understand Miss Brill in the deepest ways. This quote states quite a bit about Miss Brill, how eavesdropping and paying rapt attention to those around her helps her feel she is included not just spectating. This makes the readers feel sympathy and pity for Miss Brill as she dishearteningly goes home to her ". most of all she relishes the chance to sit in on the lives of others by listening and watching.
