The Crucible: Love Triangle

Love, hatred, and revenge all play a part of this play’s love triangle. These three reasons

all led up to the cause of the tense relationship of John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail

Williams. The three characters had dense relationships with each other. John is married too

Elizabeth who commits adultery with Abigail. Abigail was working for the Proctor’s until

Elizabeth discovers the relationship and fires Abigail.

John is the good man in town. Father of three young boys and husband to the most

honest women in town. John realizes his love for Elizabeth after Abigail charges her of

witchcraft to get John for herself. Elizabeth always was a good wife to John. John says “I mean

to please you, Elizabeth”. What he means is he will do what ever it takes to keep Elizabe

. . .

th

happy knowing that he has made a major mistake. But when brought under questioning she commits a lie that she

fired Abigail not of adultery, this she does to save the good name of her husband John. Also, while talking to John

to prove that he had feelings for her she says to him, “I know you sweated like a stallion when

you come here”. While

talking to her uncle she calls Elizabeth, “A cold sniveling women”. So John saves her for now and asked to plead with her

husband ready to be hanged she states, “He has his goodness now God, forbid I take it from him. She has like a school girl crush on John and does what ever it takes to not get in trouble

and to get her love. John told the court that

Elizabeth has never said a lie.

These accusations stir the triangle into trouble. John gets mad and with the mean voice calls her a “Child”. The love triangle is just two in the end and

loses the third party. She discovers that Abigail has charged her for

witchcraft to get to her husband, so she goes to jail of bogus charges. But, the love of John and Elizabeth is much

stronger then lust and treachery. She is

loyal to her husband and always there for him. She has only know him to do good

and knows he has done nothing wrong.
