Expecting Adam
Expecting Adam is a book about the life of Martha Beck. The book is centered around her pregnancy with her second child Adam. Beck takes you on a roller coaster ride as she describes her life. During the ride she takes you through the ups and downs of being pregnant and going to a well known university, Harvard. She takes you along as she fights the stereotypes that Harvard has ingrained into her thinking. As she progresses through her pregnancy you see the changes that take place when one has deal with uncommon situations. Beck writes of her trials and tribulations during her pregnancy. During this period she finds out that her son will be a Down syndrome baby. This is very appalling to her because of everything she was taught at Harvard. She looks at it first from the outside, seeing only the problem of her baby having Down's syndrome. Through the help of outside sources, both natural and supernatural, Beck is able to begin to cope with the situation and see that the problem is not a problem, but a
The two never talk about the future until Adam steps in and helps John "see". Adam, Martha's son, is both the source of grief and joy between Martha and her husband John. By the end of the book, Martha and John had fought through disapproving doctors, professors, and bosses. This new found understanding not only enlightens them to their son, but also to the fact that the outside world is flawed. This only furthers her belief that her son is even more special than she thought. All these unexplained events are not unsettling to Beck, but on the contrary they are very soothing. I especially enjoyed reading about her interactions with the Bunraku puppeteers and other supernatural experiences. Reading the book was like standing next to her as she experienced all the issues that she faced. I was not eager to read a book about a woman and her pregnancy. Their decision of pro-life has given them an incredible son with incredible powers of letting others "see". Throughout her pregnancy she helped by friends who mysteriously appear when needed most, hands that help her out of burning buildings, and visions of her husband while he was across the globe. I laughed, showed concern, and felt for her as I progressed through the book. The style of writing was superb and easy to follow making it difficult to put down the book.
