Kung Zi, Laozi, Han Feizi
Kongzi, Laozi, Han Feizi each had very separate ideas and ideals for the greatest ruler. Whether the ruler gain control through trust, being unseen but assertive or through force, rulers must know how to keep their people in line. Kongzi believed in maintaining control by having the people of a rulers land be able to trust a ruler. In document 1 Kongzi says instead of sacrificing people's trust first sacrifice parts of military and food. This must also mean to set up his ideal government you must first have the trust of the people. In document 2 Kongzi also expressed that harsh governments will not teach a sense of shame but just have the people avoid punishment. But, when running government through ritual the people will learn
This is expressed in document 3 as well as what the following great rulers were viewed at in his eyes. a sense of shame because they would be taught what wrong is and be able to reform. Laozi believed that the greatest of all rulers should be but a shadowy presence. He believed this was the way of the greatest ruler because ones who serve as his ministers would be afraid to do wrong for fear of execution and would look forward to doing good for love of reward, as expressed in document 4. All three people see each view have a different view of the greatest or most enlightened ruler. These three philosophers approaches are only a few of many approaches that may still be used today. Laozi's idea of the greatest ruler is a shadowy presence which contrasts Kongzi's idea that the ruler should be trusted and to be trusted one may believe that the ruler need to be known with a personality. Kongzi thought that having harsh punishments would not teach the people shame while, Han Feizi believed that having harsh punishments would keep the ministers in order. Han Feizi also believed if too much power was given to his ministers the people will be in ignorance of the ruler's power enabling the ministers to gain control. As showed in document 4 Laozi believed in a virtue called contention, this outlines how a ruler or person should do what they are best at but not actually present themselves in that manner. Kongzi's ideas totally contrast Han Feizi's ideas. In document 5 Han Feizi believes harsh punishment is essential but in document 1 Kongzi believes that that ruler should be trusted and when a ruler is killing people left and right there can never be trust between the ruler and the people. According to these people a ruler can take control over his people in many different forms or approaches. This means the ruler should be known by the people but not recognized by who actually is.
