Young Goodman Brown
The short story "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathanial Hawthorne, takes you through Goodman Brown's travels into the forest as he battles between good and evil. Goodman Brown meets many travelers along the path to his final meeting place. There are examples of symbolism in Hawthorne's short story that this paper will attempt to reveal. Young Goodman Brown had a wife called Faith; they had been married only three months. Faith's name is symbolic for the faith his has in her, his marriage, himself, and for good. There were times when Goodman Brown was in the forest and he shouted "Faith", he was shouting not only for his wife Faith, but for his faith in good. Goodman Brown hesitates when he leaves his wife and he brings his head back over the threshold of the forest to give faith one last kiss goodbye, this symbolizes the reservations he has to he her for his evil endeavor. Faith, Goodman Brown's wife, wore pink ribbons in her cap that played in the wind. Faith's ribbons are referred to several times throughout th
Goody Cloyse and the Deacon Gookin are symbolic of the evil that is in the world as they are on their way to the meeting as well. The gloominess and the darkness of the forest and the path are symbolic of evil; Goodman Brown is surrounded by evil. Snakes like to creep up on their prey and are deceiving, they hide in the shadows where you cannot see them. When I think of pink, I think of purity and innocence, and child like qualities. Later in the story, Goodman Brown catches the pink ribbon and then decided to accept evil into his life. All Goodman is concerned about is looking for his wife Faith. Travelers The first traveler that Goodman Brown meets looks very much like him, but is about fifty years old. Goodman Brown sees the rock that is up in flames. It is like he is attending his own baptism into evil. Conclusion This paper explored the possible symbolisms of Goodman Brown's wife Faith, the pink ribbons, the path, the staff, the different travelers, and the meeting. The traveler held a staff which twisted a wriggled itself like a living serpent that he later offered to Goodman Brown. By Goodman Brown accepting the staff, it is symbolic of him accepting evil into his life and losing faith. All of the symbolisms read into the battles that Goodman Brown was going though between good and evil, and his "faith". The pink ribbon then symbolizes his loss in faith as he then decides to give into evil. The staff is symbolic of evil and the snake like behavior of the traveler.
