Michael Faraday
It was September 22, 1791. Europe was in the midst of a technological revolution. Machine-made products were replacing handiworks. This was an unfortunate situation for the blacksmithing James Faraday. All his life he had worked to become a great blacksmith but now he found his work in vain. On this day, the situation had become an even greater challenge. Margaret Faraday gave birth to Michael Faraday, her third son. The Faraday family belonged to a religious group called the Sandemanians. The Sandemanians believed people should not make religion too intellectualized. In contrast, they thought God's works were very simple to understand. These ideals may have affected their outlook on Michael's short-lived early education. There was a greater production of electricity which would ultimately grow to provide power to devices like the telephone. Simply put, he was testing if magnetism would produce electricity. On August 25, 1867, Michael Faraday died in his Hampton Court home. Interestingly he was able to stay meek and modest despite his accomplishments. If the wires were bandages, it would have appeared as if the doughnut's circular arm had been wounded in two opposing places. When he first electrified the wire, the wire carried only a small amount of electric current for a little while. He says, "He began by wrapping a long piece of wire around one segment of an iron doughnut, then did the same around another segment, directly across from the first. Impressed by Michael's interest and determination, Sir Humphry Davy took Michael as his laboratory assistant on March 1, 1813. Discovering electromagnetic induction and other accomplishments had a profound effect on society then and now. Dynamos created electricity thru a constantly changing magnetic force. He left the world at the age of seventy-six. Merrill Physics: Principles & Problems defines electromagnetic induction as "production of electric field or current due to change in magnetic flux.
