Modern Technology and Genetic Engineering

Modern technology has opened up a gateway from which controversy has emerged: genetic engineering. The history of man has been a long path to immortality. From the first thought of hygiene to the modern idea of genetic engineering, individuals have sought out ways to live longer and healthier lives. People are always attempting to invent new ways to defy time, to try 'take evolution into our own hands' by redesigning the genetic information in our own children's cells. Hollywood has been showing it to us for years. Frankenstein, The Six Million Dollar Man, Jurassic Park . . . the list goes on. All these movies show man's instinct to create. However, this fiction of playing God in recent years is soon becoming a reality.
What exactly is Genetic Engineering? It is a science in which scientists splice, alter, and manipulate genes controlling specific traits to correct biological problems in living organisms. It can be used to help the human civilization in several ways. These being for example; to rid the world of dangerous and deadly diseases such as cancer, diabetes and AIDS, grow good quality and abundant amounts of food to feed the poor and starving, as well as create supreme beings with intensified senses so that we may survive without difficulty in the future.
One way genetic engineering in agriculture is used, is in cattle. Cattle have been domesticated since the dawn of history for meat and/or milk. Cattle breeders were also among the first to use sperm banks and artificial insemination. Today the dairy industry is one of the leaders in biotechnology, including genetic engineering. In cattle, genes could be inserted to reduce the amount of fat in meat. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, genes that protect cattle and other meat animals against disease could reduce the amount of antibodies they are fed, making the meat healthier for us to eat. "Genetic engineering will equip production plants and animals with ...
