The Archetypal Hero John Dunbar
John Dunbar gazed at his blood soaked foot and wondered if he should put on his boot and finish the fight. His attempt to refasten his boot over his foot was overwhelming. Deep inside he had a feeling to put his life on the line to fight for his country. This feeling described is one of an archetypal hero. John Dunbar becomes an archetypal hero in the movie Dances With Wolves. In Dances With Wolves, John Dunbar, a civil war soldier, that travels west to find new life, land, and a person in himself. In the beginning of John Dunbar’s journey, he encounters numerous problems in his initiation with the Indians. His heroic qualities start to appear when John encounters an Indian tribe for the first time. The Indians initially reject him until they realize that he is not on their land to harm them but to learn more ab . . .
John married the female character, which was the translator. At the time John left his war camp, his main objection was to discover more land out west. He suffered great losses and pain endured traveling west. At the time John meets a woman of the tribe he is relieved because she is white and can interpret English and Indian. In order to be a hero requires a princess type character and she fulfills this character. Talking to this woman builds a strong love affection between the two of them and in the end making a bond of human lives forever. Traveling by himself would be difficult and he knew he would be required to find someone to help on his journey in order to survive. One of the qualities an archetypal hero requires is a helper on the quest he undertakes and the Indians fulfill this role. John received help from the Indians to escape death numerous times. During the movie John is constantly fighting against himself to stay and is also second-guessing the idea of moving westward. The first sign of acceptance from the Indians deals with the trade of their beaded vest for the John’s wool army jacket. John was the second white person to come to the tribe following the woman. In the start of the movie the Indians shot at John Dunbar and he narrowly escaped death, which is another strong point of an archetypal hero.
