The lesson that he learns is that life and death are very close to each other, and that a knife can bring life into this world and take life away. He believes we should endure life and live it no matter what. In the short story "Indian Camp", Nick Adams a young boy discovers death and life at the same time. When Catherine finally has the baby she dies along with the baby. Nick and his father go to an Indian Camp to help a woman that has been in labor for two days. Fredrick walks home alone in the rain. And lastly Hemingway believes that we should search for the meaning to life. Nicks father being a doctor tries to help the women have her baby, but the baby wont come and Nicks is forced to perform a sea section on the women with a jack knife. He also believes that life is a series of challenges and it tries to break us. We cant just become uncommitted to live anytime we want.
