Wuthering Heighs Revenge
In the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontė, revenge is a major theme from beginning to end. Although this theme is present within all of Brontė's characters, it is most obviously displayed through Heathcliff, who seems to have the greatest desire for revenge on other characters. Heathcliff plots revenge on three main characters. First, he plots revenge on Cathy for "killing" Catherine during birth. Secondly, Heathcliff plots revenge on Hindley and for his cruel treatment to Heathcliff when Heathcliff is younger. It is also described that Heathcliff is plotting revenge against Edgar and his offspring over the death of his beloved and tragically lost obsession, Catherine. Here in Heathcliff exists a psychosomatic notion that if he revenges Catherine's death that he will be with her for all eternity when he dies. It is a result of the conclusion of the story and after Heathcliff disengages his plots and schemes following little satisfaction, is Heathcliff finally capable of viewing Catherine's spirit ghost; it is a lesson that takes a long time to learn and before it is learned, Heathcliff has already destroyed many lives in the course of his relentless eagerness for revenge. Revenge sets the stage for the ultimate destiny of He
In saving Hareton from his horrible fall down the stairs, Heathcliff has installed more agony to Hindley's life and eventually brings him to his death. When Hindley could not pay Heathcliff back, he signed over the property of Wuthering Heights to him. Therefore, author Emily Brontė has illustrated it supremely and poetically that revenge is by far the most direct plot device throughout the novel of Wuthering Heights and it is most applied to the antihero Heathcliff. Later by chapter seventeen, Isabella flees to London and gives birth to Linton Heathcliff. Nelly narrates: "His new misfortune of trouble sprang from the not anticipated misfortune of Isabella Linton evincing a sudden and irresistible attraction towards the tolerated guest. Linton he goes further to say, "Hereafter she is only my sister in name, not because I disown her, but because she has disowned me. Heathcliff on the other hand, has different plans and eventually uses Isabella as a tool in his revenge against the Linton family. Before Hindley dies, Heathcliff gets him to sign over the plot of land that is Wuthering Heights to him in return for all his financial debts. Therefore, Heathcliff is now a man of property and owns Wuthering Heights and vengefully rises in rank from where he once stood as a mere orphan that most everyone looked down upon with exception of Catherine. Heathcliff is lucky to catch Hareton at the bottom of the staircase or else, Hareton would have died. Heathcliff allowed Hindley to borrow money, for his love for gambling basically went too far, and when Hindley could not repay Heathcliff, he simply granted him Wuthering Heights. athcliff's character and this retribution survives through his wild and heartbreaking love to his final and most beautiful awakening.
