The Basics of Anorexia Nervosa

             There are many diseases/disorders involving food, eating, and weight in American society. Anorexia Nervosa is one of the main diseases that deal with the weight. Anorexia is the relentless pursuit to be thin. It is the refusal to maintain body weight at a normal weight for your age and height. Anorexia stems from the intense fear of gaining weight and becoming fat, even though underweight. When having anorexia you are usually in denial that you are experiencing a seriously low body weight.
             Women usually have this disorder, and it mostly occurs in teens or young women. Approximately one out of every hundred teens having anorexia nervosa. About eight percent of men are anorexic. The gender difference in our society explains why women predominantly have anorexia. Men are the strong powerful leaders. Men don't want to be thin and weak. But on the other hand, women are supposed to be diminutive and petite. Women then diet to lose weight, which eventually might dissolve into an eating disorder. Dieting and the resulting hunger are the most powerful eating disorder triggers known.
             When having anorexia a person might skip meals, take minuscule portions, might not eat in front of other people, eat in ritualistic ways, and mix strange combinations of foods. They might also chew mouthfuls of food and then spit them out before swallowing. They might always have an excuse for not eating; for example, they aren't hungry or they already ate, they might feel ill or be upset. Anorexia might also make a person sickened with former favorite foods. They will only eat a few safe foods and boast about how healthy their meal really is. Anorexics might try to say they are now a vegetarian, but will not eat all the necessary food that vegetarians need to eat to maintain health.
